Movie Review
Downsizing is a common worry in our hyper-competitive world. Still, few businesses have experienced the ruthless cuts that Kingsman has.

Kingsman—a high-class London clothier that also serves as a super-secret freelance spy outfit—recently suffered a series of unfortunate (and quite literal) terminations, courtesy of villainess Poppy Adams and her illicit drug cartel. Most of Kingsman's superspies were axed (or, rather, blown up). And picking up the pieces isn't possible; given the itty-bitty pieces they were blown into. The erudite English agency is, for all intents and purposes, gone.

Only one traditional agent—Eggsy, a relatively new member of Kingsman—was left unscathed, joined in the land of the living by Merlin, the Kingsman's IT wizard.

Hey, it's hard to save the world most days. But save it with a skeleton workforce? Yeah, forget it. Even the founders of Kingsman seemed to know when to call it a day. When Eggsy and Merlin pursue Kingsman's last-ditch "Doomsday" scenario—what to do, apparently, if most of the agents have been killed by a nefarious drug kingpin—it leads to a bottle of well-aged Statesman whiskey. Nothing to do now but drink one's cares away, apparently.

But as Eggsy and Merlin empty the bottle, drinking tearful toasts to their fallen comrades, they discover a telltale Kingsman symbol hidden at the bottom. Is it possible that this American whiskey distillery might hold the key to their salvation? Could this quaint Kentucky alcohol emporium hide an incredible spy network, too?! AND COULD THAT STATESMAN HOUSE HARRY, EGGSY'S BELOVED MENTOR, EVEN THOUGH HE WAS APPARENTLY SHOT IN THE HEAD AND KILLED IN THE FIRST MOVIE???!!!

Eggsy's beloved mentor once said that "manners maketh man." I believe that Kingsman's creators have a different motto: "Unbelievably dubious moments maketh movie."

Positive Elements
Eggsy and his creative cadre of covert cutthroats are certainly out to do some good here (even as they do some pretty bad things along the way). In this case, that means saving perhaps millions of lives.
Eggsy cares deeply for his friends (both inside and out of Kingsman) and, especially, his girlfriend, Princess Tilde. He wants to do right by her, and when it looks like his duty as a spy might force him into a compromising situation (more on that in Sexual Content), he protests mightily and tries to handle it as ethically as the (admittedly ludicrous) scenario allows him to.

Naturally, he risks his life at times, as do others. Indeed, one character makes what appears to be the ultimate sacrifice. ('Course, considering that this film brought back at least two apparently dead people, you never know.)

Spiritual Content
We see a wedding in a church. One of Poppy's evil henchmen is given a new robotic arm, which Poppy has nicknamed "Arm-a-geddon." Someone says, "God help us all." A song lyric includes the words, "almost heaven."

Movie Review
Like most teens, Peter Parker wants to be one of the cool kids. Only for him, the "kids" he wants to be like include a sentient android; a vaguely Nordic, hammer-holding alien; and a genius/billionaire/playboy/philanthropist.

Yeah, the rich kids' new Beemers can't quite compare to a quinjet. Even the priciest designer jeans fall somewhere short of a suit made of nitinol. The high school football team just skunked its archrival, you say? Well, that's great. Just great. Really. But have you beaten back a horde of intergalactic invaders recently?

Yeah, that's right: Peter hangs with the Avengers now and then. OK, once. Why, Tony Stark—Mr. Iron Man himself—made Peter his very own high-tech Spider-Man suit. Makes regular ol' high school feel a little blah, y'know?

But Tony hasn't been in touch lately. And Happy—Mr. Stark's ironically named assistant—doesn't return Peter's messages. Still, that doesn't keep the teen from leaving another one. Just in case.

"Just call me," he says. "It's Peter."

"Parker," he adds.

Sure, maybe Peter's superhero alter ego, Spider-Man, isn't as bulky and intimidating as the Hulk, or as powerful as Vision, or, I dunno, as Valhall-rific as Thor. But Peter thinks he still has skills to offer the A team. He's got those web shooters, after all. Not to mention his super strength and his ability to climb up walls and … those web shooters. Those would be super helpful against the next alien attack, wouldn't they? He may only be 15, but Peter's convinced he's already way more useful than, say, Hawkeye.

But in the meantime, Peter keeps himself busy: If he can't be a superhero to the world, he can at least be one to the neighborhood. After school, Peter slaps on his outfit and apprehends petty thieves, plucks cats from trees and gives the occasional old lady directions.

But one night when making the rounds, Peter sees something strange down by the local ATM. Some run-of-the-mill crooks are stealing cash using some not-so-run-of-the-mill tools and weapons. Spidey foils their nefarious scheme, but he wonders where their the weaponry came from. Clearly, the would-be robbers got these glowing, high-tech doodads from somewhere—and that somewhere could spell much bigger problems.

But Happy's dismissive. Iron Man isn't answering.

Guess it looks like a job for your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.

Positive Elements
Spider-Man: Homecoming marks the third reboot of the Spider-Man franchise in the last 15 years. This film begins after the typical origin story is over, though: after that famous radioactive spider bite; after Uncle Ben dies; and, thus, after Ben gives Peter one of superherodom's most inspiring nuggets of proverbial wisdom: With great power comes great responsibility.

We never hear that pithy slogan. But Peter still feels a tremendous responsibility to be a hero.
Spidey's all about saving lives in this movie, not ending them. He rescues high schoolers from certain death and works like the dickens to keep a loaded ferryboat afloat. He even saves a bad guy or two, risking his own life to do so.

But Homecoming isn't just about Spider-Man playing the hero: It's about him becoming one, too.

This superhero story concentrates as much on Peter's high school life as it does on his heroics—and how some of the decisions he makes are the wrong ones. He quits extracurricular activities just to be available for a call from Tony Stark. He bails on his friends. He skips class and even walks out of detention. And in his zeal to help people he sometimes harms them instead. Tony, playing a father figure to Peter, shows him some tough love and takes away his suit. When Peter protests that he's "nothing" without it, Tony says, "If you're nothing without the suit, you shouldn't have it." It's a harsh moment, but it forces Peter to come to grips with what being a hero really means.

We see plenty of positivity elsewhere, too. Peter's best friend, Ned, puts himself at risk for his pal. Peter's high school crush, Liz, is remarkably kind and understanding when he flakes out on her. Even the movie's primary antagonist, Adrian Toomes, is not without merit. Yes, he's a criminal. But he loves his family dearly. "I'm not doing anything to [them]," he rationalizes to Peter. "I'm doing this for [them]."

Spiritual Content
None, unless you see Spidey's sacrificial, stretched-out pose while trying to rescue a sinking ferry as a visual symbol for Jesus on the cross.

Movie Review
Balthazar Bratt.
At one time, he was an '80s reality show star, a TV bad boy who fancied himself a troublemaking mastermind in the body of a 12-year-old. Of course, that was then. His pimple-sprouting puberty put an end to all the television fame.

Now the nefarious Bratt is an angry 40-something who's given up stardom for a life of crime. He's a heyday-obsessed, balding has-been who sets about stealing things of great value while playing awesome mixtapes. He's a baddie who sits atop the Anti-Villain League's most-wanted list.

He's also the guy who got Gru and his beloved Lucy fired from that villain-foiling league.

Although the formerly felonious supervillain Gru and his honey have made a great baddie-busting team—even foiling Bratt's latest diamond-stealing plot—they keep letting the annoying shoulder pad-wearing crook moonwalk right through their fingers. And that kind of slip-shod work just won't do.

On top of his job loss, Gru also has to deal with the disappointment of having most of his Minions march off in a huff. These little yellow banana-loving subordinates are fed up with Gru's behavior, too. Only in their case they're simply tired of his reformed nice-guy ways. They don't want a boss who just looks mean and evil, they want someone who's really rotten to the core that they can follow and look up to.

Then, out of nowhere, Gru discovers he has a long-lost twin brother named Dru. But while the reunited bros get along famously, and Gru's adopted girls all love their new uncle, there's yet another problem. It appears that brother Dru only has one goal in mind: He wants Gru to teach him all he knows about being a super-duper bad guy. And that's a very uncomfortable temptation for Gru to turn back to the dark side.

Oh, boo. Between a lost job, missing Minions, baddy Bratt and Dru … what's a Gru to do?

Positive Elements
Despicable Me 3 shows us that there is something powerful and healing in the bonds of a loving family.

Gru takes time to connect with his youngest, Agnes, in particular. Young Agnes gets the idea in her head that she can go into a nearby forest and find a unicorn, but she only finds a one-horned goat. "The man said a maid could find a unicorn if she was pure of heart. And I'm pure in heart, right?" Agnes asks. "The purest," Gru tells her. He also talks to her about life's disappointments. "Life is like that sometimes. Sometimes you hope for a unicorn and you get a goat." But when life gives you lemons, goes the old saying, and soon Agnes wonders if it can be a great goat. (Gru assures her it can be.) In turn, Agnes shows her devotion to Gru and her family by selling her favorite toys when she thinks Gru needs money.

Lucy, meanwhile, is having doubts about her ability to be a good mom now that she's part of Gru's family. Gru guarantees her that she can and will be. Later, after a few motherly stumbles, Lucy shows herself to be a protective, loving mom and the oldest girl, Margo, hugs her in gratitude. Agnes rolls over in her sleep and calls Lucy "mom." The girls put together a surprise luau in their backyard as a makeshift belated honeymoon celebration for Gru and Lucy. Lucy also bolsters her husband when he's feeling "like a failure."

Gru and Dru's relationship becomes a bit strained, but they patch things up and express their brotherly love for one another. And even the Minions turn back to Gru, not because of his evil, but because of memories of his kindness and the times he reached out to them with a fatherly love.

Spiritual Content
The ceiling of one of the rooms in Dru's palace-like home sports a painting in the style of the Sistine Chapel … only with pigs.

Movie Review
Earth seems to be a super-magnet for the robots of the universe.

Autobot leader Optimus Prime may be seeking enlightenment somewhere in deep space. And the Decepticon bad-bot Megatron, well, who knows where he's skulking about. But no matter: A huge number of other robots have come crashing down on our planet's surface lately. And Earth's human authorities are having a hard time keeping track of them all.

Turns out, though, that there's reason for all that Earth-bound robo-traffic. It has to do with the hidden history of Transformers on Earth.

Never heard of it? Well, that's 'cause it's hidden.

You see, that secret story involves a long line of English lords who have kept the secrets … secret. There was even a group of Transformer Knights, now residing on the ocean floor, who once joined up with King Arthur way back when. And there's a pretty Oxford professor, Vivian Wembley, descended from Merlin the magician, who unknowingly has access to an incredibly powerful artifact that could reshape the universe.

All of those strangely interconnected historical threads are also tied to—get this—a middle-aged junkyard owner named Cade Yeager. Cade possesses a certain robotic talisman that makes him none other than a knight of the Transformer order. (Even though he's human and not a Transformer. Details, details.) And it's up to him to save the Earth from an ancient robot goddess who's determined to destroy the Earth.

(Pant, pant.)
OK, if you're thinking that none of that makes much sense … well, don't look at me. I'm not an English lord.

Now, let's just go watch stuff blow up.

Positive Elements
Although the fifth Transformers flick is mostly a random, ongoing cacophony of destruction, there are moments of bravery and heroism. One character declares that "without personal sacrifice, there can be no victory." Someone else suggests that we all can be heroes if we have the fortitude to step forward in a crisis.

Accordingly, a number of people put their lives on the line to save others. For instance, both Cade and Vivian run headlong into almost certain death to save mankind. Cade's daughter, meanwhile, speaks of her love for her dad.

Spiritual Content
Though Merlin is called a magician, it's clear that his "magic" is actually futuristic alien technology. Elsewhere, a robotic entity called Quintessa claims to be the Transformer "god" that created Optimus Prime. An earthly "apocalypse" is tied into Quintessa's Earth-destroying plans.

Movie Review
Forty-seven meters.
It doesn't sound like that great a distance. About half the length of a football field. A distance an elite athlete could cover in about, oh, five seconds or so. Why, I could probably lob a Frisbee 47 meters with a bit of luck and the wind at my back.

But when you're trapped in a cage 47 meters under the ocean's surface with 20-foot great white sharks circling menacingly above, well, it may as well be 47 light years.

It's certainly not the place sisters Lisa and Kate expected to find themselves. They're vacationing in Mexico, with younger sister Kate taking the spot that Lisa's beau, Stuart, was supposed to have occupied. Work commitments kept him from coming, Lisa says.

But in the middle of the night at their hotel, Kate gets up to find Lisa weeping. Stuart's not working, Lisa confesses. He's left her because she's just too boring.

Determined to help her sister not be boring anymore, adventurous Kate suggests they go out. Never mind that it's 1:30 in the morning. And so they do, knocking down shots and chatting with two locals who may or may not have picked up pretty, naïve American tourists before.

After a few rounds, those smooth-talking locals, Javier and Louis, propose that their new friends join them in a shark-watching expedition the next day. They go out with their friend, Captain Taylor, every weekend, the guys say. His boat is equipped with a shark tank that Taylor's crew drops into well-chummed water, and the sharks show up like clockwork. "It's like going to the zoo," one of the guys suggests, "only you're in the cage."

Kate's game. Cautious Lisa, well, she's not so sure. Doesn't sound like a good idea, she says.

Then again, Lisa admits, how great would it be to show Stuart that she's not so boring after all? To show him pictures of her in a cage surrounded by great white sharks?
Well, it would've been great. Probably. Had the rickety old boat's steel cable not snapped right after Lisa and Kate crawled in the cage, that is, sending them plunging—guess what—47 meters down into the abyss below.

Positive Elements
Kate's well-intentioned attempt to cheer up her sister has disastrous unintended consequences, obviously. "I'm so sorry I got you into this," she says later. Lisa, to her credit, is wisely suspicious of Captain Taylor's decidedly "low rent" shark viewing boat. "I feel super uneasy about this," she tells Kate—always a good instinct to heed when floating in shark-infested coastal waters.

Once things go awry, however, Kate and Lisa do everything possible in a harrowing, almost impossible situation to try to get back to the surface in one piece. Both are willing, at different times, to take sacrificial risks for the other. (Also, the woman's huge masks have microphones and radios to talk to each other and, at times, Captain Taylor, which enables them to formulate strategies for escape.

It's difficult to tell whether the slightly sketchy Captain Taylor really does everything possible to rescue the stranded young women. But he does send Javier down with more oxygen and a backup cable, so there is at least an attempt at a rescue. He also calls the Coast Guard (or perhaps the Mexican version of it) to help.

Spiritual Content
In a couple of hopeful moments, Lisa repeatedly exclaims, "Thank God!"

Movie Review
Captain Jack Sparrow is older and …
Well, let's just say he's older. This perpetually tipsy ne're-do-well is still struggling with pretty much the same issues he always has. Behind that wobbly swagger and semi-charming gold-toothed grin is a pirate captain who has a hard time accomplishing … anything.

Jack keeps failing to find his scruffy crew even a single gold doubloon. And his beloved galleon, the Black Pearl, has been magically shrunken down to a little skiff in a bottle that he carries around in his coat pocket. In truth, it's really a stretch to call him a captain at all.

But there's one thing no one can doubt: Jack has made a lot of enemies. And one of them—a certain zombified Captain Armando Salazar—is driving his putrefying crew of cursed sailors to find and keelhaul this captain named Sparrow.

As legend has it, many years ago a fresh-faced Jack tricked the pirate-hunting Salazar into sailing into the Devil's Triangle. There, he and his crew went down and became ensnared in a horrible eternal torment: Their dead skin may dissolve and their ship may crumble to moldering rot, but they live on and on.

Now, however, Salazar has been miraculously set free from the Triangle's confines. And he's slowly scouring the seas, destroying ships and always leaving one survivor to spread the message that he and his dead crew are coming.

They're coming for Captain Jack Sparrow.

How do you actually stop a cursed band of murderers who want your heart on a pike? Well, that's a tough one. It involves something called the Trident of Poseidon—a magical object that's rumored to control all the powers of the ocean. Of course, it's also rumored to be unfindable. In fact, the map that might lead someone to said undiscoverable treasure is rumored to be something no man can ever read.

That's a lot of rumored dead ends. But fear not, Jack Sparrow fans: Henry Turner (son of Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann) has been seeking the Trident his whole life. And he's found an astronomy-focused map-reader named Carina who's seeking that treasure, too.
Together, Jack, Henry and Carina set off on a rollicking high-seas adventure that many will one day tell tales of …

… if, that is, Jack can stay sober, upright and in one piece long enough to actually survive it.

Positive Elements
Both Henry and Carina are desperately seeking to connect with their estranged fathers. Henry wants to break a curse that binds his dad; even as a boy he risks his life to do so. And the goal of freeing his father from that spiritual bondage continues to motivate him in adulthood. Orphaned Carina, for her part, devotes herself to her missing father's oceanic research as a way to connect with him. In both sets of parent-child relationships, we witness a degree of reconciliation and redemption, with sacrificial love on display along the way as well.

Spiritual Content
Pirate superstitions abound. They take shape in the form of several curses, including the one that traps Captain Salazar and his crew. Those sailors are all zombies of sorts, with rotting skin and crumbling parts. In other cases, decomposing victims just might have a lower jaw or a detached hand that floats in the air with a ghostlike semblance. These ghoulish sailors can run on the surface of the ocean. They also magically enliven decaying sharks that they dispatch to try and kill Jack.
Because she can read star charts, some people call Carina a witch. In fact, some British officials want to hang her for her abilities. Never mind that Carina isn't a witch. But there is another tattooed woman who claims to have a witch's power. Carina hits a priest in the face with her cell door while making an escape.

Elsewhere throughout the film, various magical happenings take place.
